How Can I Become A Grassroots Football Referee?
If you are interested in becoming a referee in your local league, we will outline the best way to go about this below with our top tips and advice to help you along the journey. First, to referee at grassroots level any person must complete a FA Referee Course. On this course you can learn everything from the rules of the game, how to conduct yourself on the pitch and even how to increase your confidence levels to help you manage games and improve your decision making.
The course consists of 3 stages, the first of these stages is an online learning course which has 5 modules to be completed by the applicant. All these modules will help towards your career of becoming a referee. The second stage of this course is a face-to-face training day, this normally lasts for around 11 hours. The below areas are covered on the training day.
- Fun, interactive quizzes
- How to establish rapport and build relationships with players and coaches
- Recognising and dealing with foul challenges and handball
- Managing offside
- Dealing with inappropriate behaviour
- Managing players
- Communicating decisions
- Cautioning and sending off techniques
- Managing the kick off, free kicks, penalty kicks, corner kicks and throw-ins
- Positioning in open play and at restarts
- Being an assistant referee
The final stage to complete to become a fully FA qualified referee is to complete 5 matches at grassroots level, you will be supported by the FA throughout as you are still learning the role. When you finally complete this you will receive a certificate of completion and receive a county FA referee badge via your local FA.
How Can I Become A Grassroots Football Coach?
Another option you have is to become a coach or a manager of a grassroots team. We will give our tip tips to help you become a successful coach or manager at grassroots level. First, the basic skills we recommend for a football coach is the following.
- Good communication skills
- Leadership skills
- Knowledge of the game and how to help improve players
- Ability to monitor your own performance and your players
- Patience
We highly recommend that all coaches starting out register via the FA and take part in the ‘Introduction to coaching football’ course, this will provide lots of help and guidance on where to start and the best way to go about this. The course is a 4-week course with a cost of £160, the only age requirement is that you are 16+ to register. The booking system has various dates and times that you can register to suit you and help you start the coaching journey!
On this course you will learn about the game, the players and the coaching element of grassroots football. The course is both online and face to face, in which you have 12 months to complete the necessary stages of the course. In addition to this you later have the option to take further courses to enhance your career such as;
- The FA Level 2 in Coaching Football
- The FA Level 3 in Coaching Football (UEFA B)
- The FA Level 4 in Coaching Football (UEFA A)
- The FA Level 5 in Coaching Football (UEFA Pro License)
Each of the above courses are all relevant at different times of your coaching career and it’s important that you take this process in your own time. The FA will help guide you at when your take each course based on your development. The most important and valuable lesson that we believe in grassroots football is children and adults both enjoying the game and developing at different stages to suit the individual. As a coach we believe it is your job to help this development and let the individual enjoy the game we all love!
Where Can I Get Started With Grassroots Football?
According to England Football, there are 1,100 leagues and 18,500 clubs in the U.K. and each leagues responsibility is to arrange the fixtures and league system for each club to play. There is a club for everybody and it’s important that everyone feels welcome and is allowed to enter a friendly environment in which they can learn and enjoy the game.
A top tip we have for coaches to allow this and help when welcoming new players there are some helpful grassroots podcasts and grassroots resources in which coaches, ex-players and professionals talk about the best way to go about this. To summarise this subject, whether you want to become a grassroots player, a coach/manager, referee or even a volunteer, remember…
